Support Personnel Accountability Report Card (SPARC)

Each year our Guidance Department writes and submits an Accountability Report Card to the Los Angeles County Office of Education. This document is used to determine the quality of services that our Guidance Department provides to students, parents, and the community.
The Support Personnel Accountability Report Card (SPARC) has been developed by an advisory group of Los Angeles County counselors and consultants, counselor administrators, counselor educators and California Department of Education consultants.
This year Nogales' SPARC was awarded the Governor's Trophy by the L.A. County Office of Education for our adherence to the National Standards for School Counseling Programs and for the quality of services we provide to our students. To view the Nogales' SPARC visit: http://www.nhs.rowland.k12.ca.us/nogales/documents/SPARC2007-2008.pdf
Congratulations Nogales' Student Support Team!

Senior Bulletin "Extra" Edition-March 20, 2008

Seniors-Quick Reminders:

Four year college applicants: watch your mail for admissions notices, financial aid info, etc. Review all your emails to be sure you are not missing anything.

Community college applicants: If you are planning to apply to community colleges, you should be doing this NOW! Most of the colleges have online applications that are simple to complete. Local colleges:

Mt. Sac: www.mtsac.edu

Rio Hondo: www.riohondo.edu

Citrus: www.citruscollege.edu

Fullerton College: www.fullcoll.edu

Pasadena City College: www.pasadena.edu

Fullerton, Mt. Sac, and Pasadena all use the same system, so when you finish the one application, it will "pre-populate" for the new college. You can apply to more than one community college! Use Spring Break to visit campuses. They all have great programs to help you transfer or complete an A.A. and career degrees.

REMEMBER-after you finish applying, you must take the placement test on campus. They will email you the information, After the test, you can register for classes.

This Thursday, March 20th and Friday, March 21st during period 4 and 5 in A18, we will have workshops on completing these applications. Please start at home, and we will check them before submitting.

Financial Aid Update:
If you completed the FAFSA, watch your email and regular mail for CAL grant information. If you did not finish your FAFSA, it's not too late! Community college students can qualify for the "2nd change" CAL grant in September as well as the Federal Pell Grant. Get a FAFSA worksheet from the Guidance Office or K4 and log on to fafsa.ed.go to get it filed. Work on it during Spring Break and we'll check it when we return. (Watch out for SCAM sites like fafsa.com-THE FAFSA IS FREE!)

Watch out for Senioritis! Keep working hard. The end is in sight. Questions?? Please see your counselor.

Juniors News Flash!

Two Important Items for Juniors:

1. SAT Registration
The deadline for the May SAT is Wednesday, April 2nd! We have been assured that fee waivers will be here next week. You may only use a fee waiver if you are on the Free/Reduced lunch list. If you don't qualify, please don't wait! You can go on www.collegeboard.com to register online with a credit card. If you do qualify for a fee waiver, we will help you with registration the week we return in the A18 AVID lab. We will also go over the remaining PSAT tests that Tuesday.
You need the SAT Reasoning test for ALL four year colleges (not for community colleges, trade/tech, and most art colleges).

If you goal is a four year college, here is the timeline we suggest:
May: take the SAT reasoning test (registration deadline is April 1st).
June: take the SAT Subject test for UC/selective colleges (registration deadline is May 6th).
June: take the ACT (alternative to SAT Reasoning) (registration deadline is May 9th).

You can repeat tests in October, November, and December of your Senior year. Questions?? Please see your counselor.

2. Registration for next year's classes.
Counselors are now calling in Juniors. This will take some time, don't panic if you are not called this week. If you have a specific concern (summer school, etc), see your counselor.

Important Reminder: For four year college admissions: you must make up an D in every English class (including honors) and all other A-G classes. You need to complete Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 and a C or better. You must have Chemistry or Physics. You need two years of the SAME language. You need one year of the same Fine Art (drama, art, choir, band, photo, theater, etc). You need C's or better in these classes for four year college.

For community colleges, trade/tech schools, and most art colleges, basic graduation requirements are fine (most art and design schools want a portfolio/samples of work).
