Mount St. Mary's College

Mrs. Hall and I (Mrs. Denny) visited Mount St. Mary's Doheny campus yesterday.  We were very impressed with this school.  It is definitely a school to take into serious consideration.  They have two campus. The Doheny campus is located downtown near USC. It is for females only.  The Chalon campus is located in Brentwood near Santa Monica and it is a co-ed campus.  Both campuses are small and the student population is very diverse.
Chalon CampusDoheny Campus
Mount St. Mary's has a good nursing program.  Most of the CSU campus' nursing programs are impacted and hard to get into.  Four of our Nogales Seniors from last year are currently enrolled in the nursing programs at Mount St. Mary's.  Previous students have graduated from this school in four years and are currently employed in great nursing jobs.

Mount St. Mary's has other really good programs too.  Yesterday, we heard about how advanced their Film, Media and Communications department is and how they are getting internships and jobs for their students with big name production companies.  They also have cutting edge Criminal Justice programs.

This school is impressive, but they do not have high GPA minimums.  It is easier to get into than other private schools.  They also give really good financial aid packages.  The application deadline for this school is February 15, 2014.  Apply online at http://www.msmc.la.edu/index.asp.

There are a lot of schools out there just like this one that are good alternatives to CSU and UC schools.  See your counselor for help or look up these type of schools at https://secure.californiacolleges.edu/admissions/california-independent-colleges/california-independent-colleges.asp.

Looking forward to 2014

Now that the UC and CSU application window is over, we are looking forward to the new year.

It's not too late to apply for college. Even though the UC and CSU applications are over, there are still many private/independent colleges and universities that are accepting applications.  These schools are all different and have lots of great things to offer.  They also give out scholarships and very good financial aid packages.

The application deadlines for these schools vary and some last until late February/early March.  Check out these schools.  To find out about private schools in California: https://secure.californiacolleges.edu and http://www.aiccu.edu.

In January, we will be starting Financial Aid and Community College Applications.  Counselors will be helping students fill out the FAFSA and Dream Act applications.  Please do not pay anyone to help you fill out your financial aid forms. And be careful of scam financial aid web sites.  The web site for the FAFSA is http://www.fafsa.gov and the web site for the Dream Act application is https://dream.csac.ca.gov/.
· Financial Aid Information Night: January 14th from 6-8pm in the Little Theater (Spanish), the New Manor (English) and F8 (Dream  Act)
· CASH FOR COLLEGE: February 8 from 8am-2pm, Mt SAC-Student Life Center
· FAFSA Workshops: January 22, February 19 and 28, Periods 2-7th in the Library

Scholarship season has begun.  Seniors, read the Senior Bulletin to find out about scholarship opportunities.  Read the "Scholarship" page of the Guidance section on our school website.  You can also sign up at www.fastweb.com for more scholarship opportunities.

Our Mt SAC representative will be on campus to help with community college applications through out January and February.  Mt SAC has a lot of programs and opportunities for our students whether they are looking at transferring to a 4 year college/university, a 2 year degree, a certificate program, or job training.  For high school students, we recommend a community college over a vocational or trade school. Community colleges have everything that vocational/trade school offer for a fraction of the cost.  Please be very careful when considering a vocational/trade school.

College Application Season has begun!!

The online college application portals for both the CSU and UC's opened up October 1st. You can now start your online applications for both CSU and UC schools.  You can submit the CSU applications, but must wait till November 1st to submit UC applications.  The deadlines for both is November 30th.

The web site for CSU's: www.csumentor.edu

Independent colleges and universities have varying application deadlines.  You must check with each school.  You can find information about them on their web sites at www.commonapp.org.

We will be having college application workshops throughout October and November in the library periods 2-7.  Please plan on attending one.

Workshop dates:
October 22
October 29
November 12
November 19

If you decide to complete the applications on your own, please have your counselor check it before you submit.  It is way too easy to make a simple mistake and it is hard to correct it with the colleges once you have submitted your application.

Remember that to apply for a four year college, you must have completed the A-G requirements.  You must also have made up or in the process of making up any D's or F's that you received in an A-G class.  See you counselor with questions!

Today is the deadline for the November SAT.  If you don't sign up, you will still be able to sign up for the December SAT.  The December SAT is the last SAT you can take that the colleges will accept.  Go to www.collegeboard.com to sign up.

Senior Bulletin

Spring Break Edition
Thursday, September 29

Keep Working!  You have 42 days of school left in your high school career.

AP test takers:
The AP Fee Reducation Request is due tomorrow, Friday, March 29th.  Abolutely no exceptions!  Be sure you bring it in to the box by Mrs. Hall's door or to Mrs. Chavira.  If it's not turned in, you'll pay $89 per test.  (This is the middle page of the packet.  More packets are next to Mrs. Hall's door.)

FAFSA  Slackers:
You can still complete the FAFSA form and get $$$ for college.  For community colleges, there is a September 2 "second deadline".  For four year colleges, you might still qualify for the Pell grant (federal money).  During the break, log on to fafsa.gov with your parent's tax information and get going.

FAFSA completers:
Congrats to the 191 Cal Grant awardees who earned big $$$ for college!  Don't forget to update your FAFSA with this year's taxes and any college changes.  Super important: be sure to go to the "webgrants4students" site to set up your account.  This will tell you whether or not you qualified for a Cal Grant, etc. Do this ASAP!

Four Year College Applicants:
Be sure you are reading everything you are sent, online and on paper!  CSU Applicants: Be sure to sign up for the EPT/ELM if you need it.  The CSU's all have different deadlines for this, so it's up to you to be sure you take it.  You can be admitted, then denied for not taking these tests.  Google EPT/ELM to sign up.  Do it now!

Community College Applicants!
You can apply NOW at CCCApply for all public community colleges in California!  If you applied to CSU Mentor, you can use that username and password.  The sooner you apply, the more likely you will get classes.  If you delay, you'll lose out!
If you are aplying to Mt. SAC, download, print and turn in the Summer Bridge application.  The deadline to apply for the Summer Bridge is April 19th.
