The Asian Pacific Youth Leadership Conference

The Asian Pacific Youth Leadership Project (APYLP), a nonprofit organization, reaches out to Asian and Pacific Islander youths in California to build on their understanding of what it means to be Asian Pacific Islander American students in today’s culturally and ethnically diverse society. APYLP’s annual conference offers group workshops on leadership development, cultural identity and awareness, the legislative process, and public speaking skills. Students also participate in mock legislative sessions, learn about higher education opportunities, and take part in various social activities during the conference. Fifty junior and senior year high students will be selected for the four-day, three-night conference in Sacramento which is scheduled to take place April 2-5, 2009, in Sacramento. The APYLP completely covers the travel, lodging, and meal expenses for the students selected to participate in its conference. Applications must be postmarked no later than November 11, 2008. CAHSEE for Seniors!

Seniors! If you have not passed the CAHSEE yet, your next opportunity is coming up fast! You will be taking the English part of the CAHSEE on October 7th and the Math part of the CAHSEE will be given on October 8th. If you have any questions about taking the test or preparing for it, see your counselor.

Need Credits??

We will be offering a new Forensic Science class after school through ROP...so whether you need credits or you are interested in Forensic Science...this opportunity is for you! You will be able to earn up to 10 credits!

The class starts next week and will be offered at Nogales on Mondays and Wednesdays. If you are interested, see your counselor immediately.

The 58th Assemby District College Fair

You are invited to the honorable Charles M. Calderon Assemblyman presents the 58th Assembly District College Fair.

There will be admissions representatives from 30 colleges and universities and you will receive information about college admissions requirements and application process. There will be random drawing for scholarships and financial aid workshops in English and Spanish.

The College fair will held on Saturday, October 11th from 10am-1:00pm at California State University, Los Angeles at the Golden Eagle Conference Center, 5151 State University Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90032.

Seniors! Hurry up and sign up for the November SAT!

If you have not taken or registered for the SAT, you must do so immediately. The SAT is a test required by four year college/universities as part of the admissions criteria. If you are planning on applying to a UC, CSU or private college/university, you must take the SAT.

The deadline for the November SAT is this Friday, September 26th. You can register online for the test at www.collegeboard.com. If you need a fee waiver see your counselor immediately.

College Information Night

Class of 2009: Seniors and Parents!

Don't miss College Information Night! We will cover all aspects of college applications, including testing, transcript review, financial aid, scholarships, etc. Be sure to come! We will do a session in English and a seperate session in Spanish.

College Information Night will be held at 6:30pm on Tuesday, October 7th. The English session will be held in the Manor and the Spanish Session will be held in the Little Theater.

Mt. San Antonio College presents the 4th Annual Inland Valley Black College Summit. Students will get a Virtual HBCU tour, Panel Discussion, Step Show, Admissions and Finacial Aid workshops, and meet recruiters from Historically Black Colleges and Universities and local universities.

The Parent Institute for Quality Education

The Parent Institute for Quality Education will be conducting a nine-week program at Nogales beginning September 24th. The Parent Institute will cover topics such as understanding the high school system, the importance of grades, graduation requirements, getting your student into college, and financial aid. Child care is provided. All Nogales parents are welcomed to attend this very informative and helpful program.

Dreamer's Challenge Scholarship Contest

STATE SCHOOLS CHIEF JACK O’CONNELL ENCOURAGES STUDENTS
TO ENTER DREAMERS CHALLENGE SCHOLARSHIP CONTEST

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell today encouraged every twelfth grade student in California to enter The California Museum’s Dreamers Challenge to explain how they would change the world. The winner will earn a $5,000 cash scholarship.

The Dreamers Challenge is inspired by the California Hall of Fame that inducts men and women from all walks to life who have made distinguishing achievements across many fields, including the arts, education, business, labor, science, sports, philanthropy, and public service.

The Dreamers Challenge is open to every public, private, or home-schooled high school senior expected to graduate with the Class of 2009. The winning entry will receive a $5,000 scholarship generously provided by Comcast. Entries can be an essay, video, audio, or artwork, but must be submitted digitally on CD or DVD. The deadline is October 10, 2008.

College Bound Seniors!

Seniors,

If you are planning on applying for a UC, CSU or Independent College or University, you must take either the SAT or ACT (if you are applying to a UC, you must also take the two Subject Tests).  If you need to take the SAT, Subject Tests or ACT for the first time or the second time, the registration deadlines are coming fast for the October test dates!!  Register now!!

Juniors...GET READY FOR COLLEGE!

Juniors, be sure to sign up for the 2008 PSAT !!

What is the PSAT?
A full-length practice test to prepare students who plan to attend 4 year college for the SAT Reasoning Test (College-bound Juniors take the SAT this Spring;
Sophomores take the SAT in Spring 2010).

Why take the PSAT?
The PSAT is the BEST preparation for SAT success!
Scores are returned & explained in December.
Also, several scholarships are offered for
Juniors who score well on the PSAT, including
National Merit, National Hispanic and
National Achievement (for African American students)
Nogales alums have received ALL of these!

When will the PSAT be held?
The test will be offered here at Nogales on
WEDNESDAY, October 15 starting at 7:00 a.m. in the Gym.

How do I sign up?
Please go to the ASB Office starting Friday, Sept. 5.
The cost for the test is $15, cash or check to NHS/ASB.
There are LIMITED fee waivers for JUNIORS ONLY –
You must be ON the free/reduced lunch LIST to qualify!

Warning: Last year, we ran through the waivers the FIRST DAY,
and we ran out of tests!

CAHSEE tutoring for Class of 2006, 2007, and 2008

Attention Class of 2006, 2007, and 2008,
If you did not recieve your diploma because you did not pass either the English or Math sections of the CAHSEE, we can help you! Mt. Sac is offering CAHSEE tutoring at Nogales and at Mt. Sac.

Tutoring is available at Nogales Monday and Wednesdays from 3-6pm in K4.
