Concepts of Computer Systems class

Interested in earning college credit in high school. Mt. Sac will be offereing their Concepts of Computer Systems class at Nogales High School for the Spring 2008 semester. There will be no tuition costs and you must be 16 to enroll. Classes will be held after school at Nogales and you will receive dual high school and college credit.

The class will provide an understanding of computer information systems: computer hardware, software, data communications, computer ethics, computer security, systems analysis and design, Internet, problem solving, and programming using multiple computer platforms.

Mt. Sac classes for High School students

Mt. Sac's High School Special Admit Program is now taking applications for the Spring 2008 semester. The Special Admit program allows high school students (10th-12th graders) who would benefit from advanced scholastic or vocational work, the opportunity to enroll in courses during the Fall, Spring, and Summer terms. Students receive dual college credit and high school credit. Orientation dates start February 11th and individual appointments begin January 28th. For more information call Mt. Scholarship opportunity for Juniors!

The Discover Scholarship Program is offering up to 10 scholarships in the amount of $30,000 each to current high school juniors.

Who is eligible to apply?
Any current high school junior who:
Has at least a 2.75 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale for 9th and 10th grades
Demonstrates accomplishments in community service and leadership and has faced a significant roadblock or challenge
How many scholarships are available?
Up to 10 scholarships of $30,000 each
How may scholarships be used?
Scholarships may be used for any type of post-high school education or training, certification, licensing, two- or four-year trade and technical education or a two- or four-year college degree.
How do students apply?

Need CAR hours??

The library is in need of students to volunteer in the afternoon. The library is open to the community and as a volunteer you would work with elementary and middle school students either reading to them or helping them with their homework. If you are interested, please stop by the library right after school and speak to Anne Sadeghpour, the community librarian. This a great way to earn your CAR hours.

Financial Aid Night for Seniors and Parents

"Jumpstart" Night for parents is December 3rd at 6:30pm. Sessions in both English and Spanish will be offered.

The counselors will speak to ALL the Senior English classes on December 12th during school. We want ALL Seniors, no matter what their plans are, to apply for Financial Aid. Filling out the FAFSA is free and will get you free $$$$- up to $1500 for community college, $3000-$7000 for a CSU/UC, and up to $9000 for California private colleges. You can also get financial aid for vocational/training schools.

Seniors Applying to CSU and UC!!

The deadline for applying to a CSU or a UC is November 30th!!!! If you have not completed either application, you need to get started. We will be doing workshops on Friday, Nov. 16th 2nd to 5th period, Monday, Nov. 19th all day and Tuesday, Nov. 20th all day until 6pm. Workshops in A18 during periods 1st to 5th periods and in K4 periods 6th, 7th and afterschool.

Please pick up a transcript to help you fill out the application and have your counselor check it before you submit.

Out of state and private universities will be our next focus. The application deadlines for these schools will be December (USC is Dec. 10th) through Febuary. Community College applications start in Febuary.

Senior Bulletin-October 29, 2007

The last SAT deadline for Seniors applying to four year colleges is tomorrow, October 30th! If you haven't taken the test or need to re-take it, please see Mrs. Hall in K4 today! (She will only be here in the morning tomorrow.

The last ACT deadline is this Friday, Nov. 2nd!!

You do not need to take the ACT or SAT if you plan to attend a community college, fine arts college, or trade/tech colleges.

We will continue our CSU/UC workshops this Wednesday, October 31st and Thursday, November 1st all day in A18. If you have not attended the workshop, you should definitely come any period on Wednesday.

CSU Applications are due November 30th (Cal Paly San Luis Obispo's Early Action deadline is October 31st).
UC applications are due November 30th. Filing starts this Thursday, November 1st.

Test Reminder

The deadline for the last SAT Seniors can take for a 4 year college is Tuesday, October 30th! The deadline for the last ACT is November 2nd! You do not need to take the SAT or ACT for community colleges, only for 4 year colleges.

CSU and UC workshops

CSU and UC workshops will continue this week. Wednesday, October 24th and Thursday, October 25th -Periods 2 to 7 and after school from 3:15 to 5:00pm.

If you have not attended a workshop yet and you are CSU eligible and need help, please attend one of these sessions. You need an email address and an estimate of your parent's income. You can apply by yourself on csumentor.edu, but don't submit your application without a counselor checking.

City of La Puente Scholarship

The City of La Puente is offering a minimum of twenty scholarships in the amount of $500 to High School Seniors.

The criteria for this scholarship is as follows:
  • Ability to show merit by school behavior, school participation and at least a 2.0 gpa or better
  • Ability to demonstrate financial need
  • Ability to prove residency within the city limits

New Scholarships

The Jewish Federation of Greater San Gabriel and Pomona Valley is offering the Kimberly Dawn Ellis Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship is for seniors who are planning on attending a 4 year college and its in the amount of $500.

CAHSEE test for Seniors

We will be administering the CAHSEE for Seniors who still need to meet this graduation requirement.

The English section of the CAHSEE will be given on Tuesday, October 2nd in the Manor at 7:30am. The Math section of the CAHSEE will be given on Wednesday, October 3rd in the Manor at 7:30am. Please be on time.

If you have any questions regarding the CAHSEE and if you still need to take it, please talk to your counselor ASAP.

Oct. 2nd Deadline for Nov. SAT!

College Workshops for Seniors!

If you plan to go to a 4 year college/university: you will receive period by period workshop invitations starting Monday, October 1st. The workshops will be held in the College and Career Center. You choose which period to attend, but don't miss a core class, test, etc.

To attend a CSU or a UC, you must:
*Have at least a 2.5 (3.0 for UC's)
*Complete Algebra 2 or above, Biology and Chemistry/Physics, 2 years of a foreign language, 2 years of English, a year of a fine art, etc all with C's or better.
*Take the SAT Reasoning or ACT by December (UC's also require the SAT Subject tests).
***If your goal is a community college or trade school, you do not need to meet these course and test requirments.

New Scholarships

There are two new scholarships for Seniors!

Coca Cola is offering the Coca Cola Scholarships for Seniors. There are 50 $20,ooo, 200 $10,000, and 250 $3,000 scholarhips. The deadline is October 31st. To apply visit www.coca-colascholarhips.org.

The Friends of Arts Education at the Cerritos Center is offering Performing Arts Scholarships for High School Seniors. There are scholarships in the areas of classical voice, dance, drama, instrumental music, and musical theatre (voice). The deadline to apply for these scholarhips is 5:00pm, Friday, November 2nd. Attention Juniors and Sophomores!!

It's time to sign up for the PSAT! If you are a college bound junior or sophomore, it is very important that you take the PSAT. The PSAT is a full-length practice test to prepare students who plan on attending a 4-year college for the SAT Reasoning Test. The PSAT is the best preparation for the SAT. Several scholarships are offered to Juniors who score well on the PSAT including National Merit, National Hispanic, and National Achievement (for African American students).

The PSAT will be held here at Nogales on Wednesday, October 17th at 7am in the gym. Please go to the ASB office starting Monday, October 1st to register for the test. The test fee is $15 cash or check to NHS/ASB. There are limited fee waivers for Juniors only. 58th Assembly District College Fair

Seniors!

Assemblyman Charles M. Calderon is hosting a College Fair for all parents and high school seniors from our area. There will be 30 colleges and universities there, information about college admissions requirements and the application process, financial aid workshops, AND RANDOM DRAWINGS FOR THOUSANDS IN SCHOLARSHIP MONEY!!!!!

Got C.A.R.?

Here are two opportunities to get your CAR (Community Activity Requirement...aka. Community Service) hours done.

The library needs students for the after-school homework program for students grades K-6 in the NHS library Mondays-Thursdays 3pm-6pm. Plese see the Anne Sadeghpuor, the community librarian after 3pm to sign up.

VISTAS Hospice also has volunteer opportunties for students needing CAR hours. Volunteers work with terminally ill patients by offering friendly companionship, administrative help, crocheting, sewing, and knitting, scrapbooking, pet therapy, music, telephone assurance, bereavement, massage or cosmetology. How to Apply to a UC

1. The UC application is available from the University of California website.
• The UC application filing period is November 1-30, but you may begin working on your application beginning October 1.
• The UC application fee is $60.00 per campus.

Getting Ready for College

If you goal is a four year college (UC's, CSU. etc)...
1. Take or retake the SAT, ACT, and/or Subject Tests by December. The deadline for the October SAT/Subject Tests is this Monday, September 10th! The deadline for the ACT is September 11th! Go to Collegeboard.com to sign up or visit Mrs. Hall in the College and Career center for a fee waiver (you can get one if you are on the reduced/free lunch list).

2. Be sure you have the right classes to meet the CSU/UC A-G requirements. If you're not sure visit your counselor (quick!).

3rd Annual Inland Valley Black College Fair

Mt. San Antonio will be hosting the 3rd Annual Black College Fair on Saturday, September 15th from 10am to 3pm at Mt. San Antonio College in the Sophia B. Clark Theater. At the college fair, you will get to connect with representatives from Historically Black Colleges & Universities and learn about admissions requirements. Its free and it includes lunch and parking.

Class Schedules

Welcome back Nobles!

Reminder: you must pick up your official schedule on the 1st day of school, Monday, August 27th, in the gym before attending class. You will not be allowed into your classes without a "legal" class schedule.

If you feel you will need to request a class change, you must fill out the blue Request for a Schedule Change form from the main office. Your counselor will not accept the form unless it is completely filled out and is signed by both student and parent. Schedule changes are not guaranteed. Schedule changes will only be made during the first week of school.

New College Algebra Class

We are offering a new College Algebra class for the upcoming school year. The class serves as a bridge from Algebra 2 to Pre-Calculus as well as to allow Seniors the opportunity to continue to develop their math skills as they prepare to enter college. The prerequisite for the course is a grade of a "C" or better in Algebra 2. This course meets UC and CSU A-G entrance requirements. If you are interested in adding this class, see your counselor.

Freshman Orientation

Welcome incoming 9th Graders...the Class of 2011! We hope you are excited about coming to Nogales as we are preparing a great kickoff/orientation for you! Freshmen orientation is scheduled for Friday, August 24th. We will start at 8:00am in the Gym with Link Crew Orientation. New Summer Cosmetology Class

If you are interested in Cosmetology, ROP is offering an intensive class this summer. The class begins Tuesday, June 26th and ends on Friday, August 24th. It is one session from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm and held each day from Tuesday to Friday. Transportation will be provided from Nogales High School during the time we are having summer school. New EMT Class!

If you are interested in the medical field or would like to become a firefighter, this class is for you! We have a new EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) class for the 2007-2008 school year. If you are going to turn 18 some time in the school year and you complete this class, you will be eligible to take the EMT test to become a certified EMT, which means you can apply for a job as an EMT. This can open the doors to a career as a firefighter, a job while in college, or great experience if you're planning on attending medical school some day. See your counselor to add this class.

New Computer Class for College Credit!!

Mt. Sac is offering their Concepts of Computer Sytems class here at Nogales after school in the Fall. This is a college class and it is Community College and UC transferable (and you get high school credit too). Its a great way to jump start your college career while you're still in high school. There is not tuition costs. For more information, visit your counselor.

Summer School ROP Classes

If you need extra credits or looking for a fun class to take this summer, ROP is offering several classes at Nogales H.S. Classes include Photography, Criminal Justice, Medical Assistant, and Web Page Design. Classes start at either 10:00am or 1:00pm. Got College???

If you still don't have your post graduation plans set and you want to go to college, it's not too late! There are still some CSU campuses taking applications (you must have taken the A-G required classes). Visit csumentor.edu to see what CSU schools are still taking applications.

Also, this is the time to start registering for community college. The later you wait, the higher risk you run of not being able to register for the classes you want. Remember, you'll need to take placement tests before you can register for classes. Register online or visit the College and Career Center to get paper applications for Mt. Sac, Rio Hondo, Fullerton, and Citrus college.

Oh...and Financial Aid! It's not too late to submit your application. You never know what aid you might qualify for and you'll need to submit a FAFSA to get a student loan. Apply online at fafsa.ed.gov. See your counselor or Mrs. Sandoval with any questions.

SAT for Class of 2008

If your goal is to attend a four year university or college after graduation, then you need to take the SAT 1 for all colleges and SAT 2 for UC's. You should take them at least once before school starts. To sign up visit collegeboard.com or for a paper registration and/or fee waiver, see Mrs. Hall in the College and Career Center. See your counselor to talk about any A-G required class you may need to make up for college.

Class Changes

We will accept fall class changes all the way up to the last day of school. If you have any questions about your fall schedule, visit your counselor!!!

Seniors!

All Adult School classes, ROP hours, and Mt. Sac classes must be completed by June 8th (official grade report must be in your counselor's hands by 3:00pm on this date)! CAR hours must also be completed by June 8th.

Classes for Summer School are now full. If you want to take a Summer School class, you must come to the Manor at 1:00pm on Monday, June 18th. If room becomes available, you will be able to add a class at this time.
