Seniors...Are you Scared?!?!

Seniors-It's Halloween...Are you scared? If you plan to apply to CSU or UC's and you have not started your application, YOU SHOULD BE SCARED!

Just ANOTHER REMINDER: You can apply to CSU's NOW at csumentor.edu. You can start applying to UC's tomorrow, November 1st at universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions.

Both CSU and UC applications must be completed by November 30th. This is the Sunday after Thanksgiving...so you need to get help in the next two weeks.

You need to complete the ACt or the SAT Reasoning for both CSU's and UC's by December...last chance! Deadline for the SAT is this Wednesday, November 5th and for the ACT, it's Friday, November 7th. The UC's also require two SAT Subject Tests. Deadline is the same as the SAT. Fee waivers available for all three tests. You do not need these tests for community colleges.

We ahve been telling you this same information since August...if you are qualified (A-G courses, GPA, etc) and want to apply, GET GOING NOW! go on the above web sites this weekend. We'll have workshops all day Monday through Wednesday next week in A-18. Mrs. Hall will stay afterschool on Monday, November 3rd for help. Community College workshops/information sessions are coming in November.

Algebra 2 Free Tutoring!

Nogales offers free tutoring afterschool in the library from 3-4pm Monday-Thursday. Tutoring is taught by teachers.

Additionally, on Wednesdays, we have Mr. Mangahas in the library offering tutoring specifically for Algebra 2. If you need help with Algebra 2, please go! No need to sign up ahead of time, just show up.

Parent Bilingual Conference

The Mexican American Student Association invites you to their annual Parent Bilingual Conference. The conference will be held on November 15th from 9:00am to 3:00pm at the Cal Poly Pomona Bronco Student Center, Building 35.

The conference is free and you are welcome to bring the whole family. Lunch and childcare will be available.

There will be workshops on college admissions, financial aid, AB 540, and much more. Please call (909) 869-3626 to RSVP or for more information.

Online Application Workshops for CSU and UC applications will be held the following days and times:
Thursday, October 23rd: after school till 2pm in K4
Friday, October 24th: all day (periods 2-7) in A18
Monday, October 27th: periods 3-7 in A18
Tuesday, October 28th: periods 3-7 and after school in A18
Thursday, October 30th: 3:15pm to 6pm in A18

Please go on the csumentor.edu site ASAP to get started! Come to a workshop to get help. Teacher permission is required to attend a workshop during the school day. Do not miss a core class, test, group presentation, etc.

The CSU and UC application deadline is November 30th. We have plenty of time. Complete the CSU application first...UC filing starts November 1st.

Test Reminders!
The last tests for Seniors applying to 4 year colleges are in December. The deadline for the SAT is November 5th. The deadline for the ACT is November 7th. Fee waivers will be available for both tests. Remember: the UC's require Subject tests as well as the reasoning test. Community colleges and trade/tech schools do not require these tests.

College Visits:
Tuesday, October 28th: UCLA during periods 2 & 3 and APU during 8th period
Friday, October 31st: Whittier College during periods 2 & 3
Tuesday, November 4th: SOKA University during periods 2 & 3
Sign up to attend in K4. Teacher permission is required.

Scholarships
Check the scholarship box in K4 Friday for current scholarships. Be sure to create a fastweb.com account for free scholarship searches.

Confused about college choices? Log on to californiacolleges.edu and do a search of your options. It's fee and legit. Get help from your counselor too.

FALL REPORT CARD NIGHT will be held on Thursday, October 23, 2008 from 2:00pm-4:00pm & 6:00pm-8:00pm. We encourage all parents to attend and meet with your student's teachers. You will also receive your student's progress grades.

Seniors applying to four year colleges:
We'll be calling in all qualified students for online application workshops starting this week. You should get started on the CSU application NOW if you can to apply-don't wait for a call-in! Go to csumentor.edu, click on "apply online" tab, click on undergraduate application, click on box for Fall 2009. You can get a copy of your transcript from your counselor or Mrs. Hall in K4/K5 at lunch. We'll review important application tips at the call-ins...Don't submit application without getting it checked first. Our goal is to finish CSU applications by Halloween and UC applications by Thanksgiving. ALL CSU AND UC APPLICATIONS MUST BE COMPLETED BY NOVEMBER 30TH!

SAT reminders: You need to take the SAT Reasoning or ACT test by December for four year colleges. You also need 2 SAT subject tests for UC's. SAT deadline is November 5th and ACT deadline is November 7th. We still have fee waivers for both. You do not need to take these tests for community colleges...their applications are due in the Spring.

Just a reminder...College Information Night is tomorrow, Tuesday, October 7th at 6:30pm.
English presentation will be in the Little Theater and the Spanish presentation will be in the Library.

If you have not yet joined the National Honor Society, applications will be available in K4 on Monday, October 6th. A 3.0 weighted FPA and positive record are required.

Class of '09: It's October!
CSU and UC application time has started. Next week, starting on Wednesday, October 8th, we will begin period by period workshops on how to complete an online applications. Eligible students will get a notice in 1st or 2nd period. You'll be able to come any period. We'll give you a packet to get started.
Just A Reminder
To be eligible for CSU and UC, you need to complete the A-G requirement classes AND take the SAT Reasoning and/or ACT test no later than this December! (UC also requires 2 subject tests by December.) The December ACT deadline is November 2nd and the deadline for the SAT is November 5th. There is plenty of time to sign up. Fee waivers are available. YOU DO NOT NEED THESE TESTS FOR A COMMUNITY COLLEGE! CONFUSED? Ask you counselor.

The Priority Filing period for Cal State University campuses is October 1-November 30th. We wnat to be finished with the CSU applications by October 31st! The are very simiple-no e3ssay. letters, etc. You can go to csumentor.edu to start, but don't submit til we've checked. After CSU applications, we will work on the UC application and finish those by Thanksgiving.
Important Things To Remember
If you taking the SAT test this weekend, be sure you have your admission ticket, a simple calculator and a photo id.
College Info Night
Tuesday, October 7th in the Little Theater at 6:30pm in English and in the library in Spanish. We'll talk about both 4 year, community, trade tech, and art colleges.
College Fairs:
Rowland High School in the Hideout at 6:30pm on October 16th
Cal State LA at 1pm on Saturday, October 11th. Come by K4 for a map and directions.

College Fair 2008

All students and parents are invited to meet college representatives at Rowland's College Fair. The College Fair will be on October 16th from 6:30-8:30 pm at Rowland High School's Hideout.

Free tutoring is available at the Nogales Library Monday through Thursday from 3-4pm. Tutoring is available for English, Math and Science subjects.

1. Filing period for CSU applications begins.
2. Avoid Senioritis!!
3. Work on college essays.
4. CSS/Profile available online.
5. If you mail to anything to colleges, get a certificate of mailing at the Post Office.
6. If you haven't taken the ACT or SAT or need to re-take it, make sure you sign up asap at www.collegeboard.com or www.act.org.
