New Features on www.californiacolleges.edu

SACRAMENTO — State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell today announced that there are new features on the state’s “one-stop online shop,” http://www.californiacolleges.edu/, a Web-based resource that helps thousands of California students prepare for college.
CaliforniaColleges.edu is the state’s official publicly funded Web site designed to provide free information to students, counselors, and parents about colleges and careers, admission policies, and how to plan and pay for higher education.
All users of CaliforniaColleges.edu may also quickly and easily locate current detailed information ranging from admission criteria to financial aid to athletic programs offered at more than 215 public and private California colleges and universities. Users can even search for colleges based on personal preferences and create side-by-side comparisons of the schools that match the preferences. When students are ready to apply to college, they can simply follow a link to the online application form for most California colleges and universities.
One of the most powerful tools of CaliforniaColleges.edu is the “High School Planner” that allows students to enter their coursework and grades received beginning in grade eight. By doing so, students can determine their progress toward meeting the minimum eligibility requirements (know as the “a-g” subject requirements) for admission to a public four-year college or university in California. The Web site’s “Career” section provides a series of free assessments that help users determine their strengths, values, and interests. The results of these assessments can be matched to career paths, college majors, and particular postsecondary education institutions that offer those majors.
The comprehensive “Financial Aid” section of the Web site provides a scholarship search engine that allows users to search a nationwide database by entering a keyword or establishing a personal profile. It is also possible to view sample financial aid packages that use predetermined scenarios to show how a financial aid package is prepared at California Community Colleges, California State University, University of California, and private schools. By setting up a free and secure account on the site, students can even transfer their personal information directly to the online Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) that all financial aid applicants are required to file annually with the U.S. Department of Education.
CaliforniaColleges.edu is a collaborative initiative of the California Education Round Table comprised of the chief executives from the California Department of Education, the University of California, the California State University, the California Community Colleges, California Postsecondary Education Commission, and the Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities. For more information, please visit http://www.californiacolleges.edu/.

Senior Bulletin "Extra" Edition-March 20, 2008

Seniors-Quick Reminders:

Four year college applicants: watch your mail for admissions notices, financial aid info, etc. Review all your emails to be sure you are not missing anything.

Community college applicants: If you are planning to apply to community colleges, you should be doing this NOW! Most of the colleges have online applications that are simple to complete. Local colleges:

Mt. Sac: www.mtsac.edu

Rio Hondo: www.riohondo.edu

Citrus: www.citruscollege.edu

Fullerton College: www.fullcoll.edu

Pasadena City College: www.pasadena.edu

Fullerton, Mt. Sac, and Pasadena all use the same system, so when you finish the one application, it will "pre-populate" for the new college. You can apply to more than one community college! Use Spring Break to visit campuses. They all have great programs to help you transfer or complete an A.A. and career degrees.

REMEMBER-after you finish applying, you must take the placement test on campus. They will email you the information, After the test, you can register for classes.

This Thursday, March 20th and Friday, March 21st during period 4 and 5 in A18, we will have workshops on completing these applications. Please start at home, and we will check them before submitting.

If you completed the FAFSA, watch your email and regular mail for CAL grant information. If you did not finish your FAFSA, it's not too late! Community college students can qualify for the "2nd change" CAL grant in September as well as the Federal Pell Grant. Testing Reminder for Juniors and Parents!!

If your goal is to attend a four year college after high school, you need to take the SAT and/or ACT test this Spring!!

For CSU admission, you must take the SAT Reasoning test and/or the ACT test. The writing test is not required.

For UC admission, you must take the SAT Reasoning test and/or the ACT, AND take two SAT Subject tests (Math II, US History, Foriegn Language, etc). Selective private colleges also require the SAT Subject Tests.

Here is a suggested timetable:
March '08-SAT Reasoning Test (Deadline is Tuesday, January 29th)
April '08-ACT test (Deadline is March 7th)...Take the ACT Plus Writing for UC's!
May '08-SAT Reasoning Test or SAT Subject Test (For UC's or selective colleges) (Deadline is April 1st!)
June '08-SAT Reasoning or Subject test (Deadline is May9th). ACT test (Deadline is May 9th)

Your goal should be to take the SAT and the ACT by June '08. If you plan to apply to UC's, you should also take the Subject tests by June '08. You cannot take the SAT and the Subject Tests on the same day.

You may repeat these tests in October, November, and December, but you don't want to wait till Senior year to take them for the first time. The colleges will use your BEST scores when you apply as a Senior and repeating the test almost always improves your score.

To sign up for the SAT, go to http://www.collegeboard.com/
To sign up for the ACT, go to http://www.act.org/
