Financial Aid Workshop

Our last FAFSA workshops will be held this Thursday, February 28th in the library periods 2-7.  Come by and get help!  Bring your parents taxes!! 
The last date to submit your FAFSA for Cal Grant eligiblity is March 2nd.  Don't wait till the last minute!!

Adelante Mujer Latina Conference

It's time for the annual Adelante Mujer Latina conference!  The conference is for high school female students and offers over 85 workshops about different careers, college, and many more topics to help students become successful women.
The conference will be held on Saturday, may 11th at Pasadena City College. 
If you are interested in attending, please register with Mrs. Cortez at lunch time.  Or you can sign up online at http://www.adelantemujerlatina.org/.  The deadline to register is March 22nd. There is a $20 fee that covers admissions, cost of materials, and a catered lunch. 
If you are interested in riding the bus, it will leave Nogales at 7:15am and return at 4:00pm.   It is free to ride the bus.

Scholarships

Keep applying for scholarships and don't forget to apply for Financial Aid.  Documented students can apply using the FAFSA at www.fafsa.gov.  Undocumented students, including students who applied for Deferred Action will apply using the California Dream Act application at www.caldreamact.org.  The deadline is March 2nd!  Questions?  See your counselor.  Our next Financial Aid workshops are tomorrow, Friday, February 15th in the Library from periods 2-7.  Our last workshops will be on Thursday, February 28th in the Library from periods 2-7.

Scholarships

The 1st Cycle of the Verizon Scholarship Awards Program offers 10 - $1,000 awards for current high school seniors who are residents of California, Oregon or Washington or who are planning to attend college in one of those states. They must be entering their first year of college in Fall 2013 at a 4-year, accredited college/university, and planning to major in math, engineering, or any science field.

CALSA, in partnership with De La Rosa & Co. seeks to fulfill its goal of “increasing the number of successful Latinos/Latinas” by offering no less than fifteen (15) scholarships to further the pursuit of higher education for Latino/a students. Each scholarship will be awarded in the amount of $1,000 for the 2012-2013 academic school year.

YWPL: California Edition Running Start Conference

Hosted in conjunction with: USC’s Unruh Institute of Politics, California Women Lead & USC’s Women’s Student Assembly

Want to learn what it takes to become the first Madame President? Come to Running Start’s Young Women’s Political Leadership Program: California Edition! Learn about the importance of political leadership in this day-long workshop designed for young women in high school who display leadership potential and an interest in politics.

The workshop will emphasize hands on training and will include a panel of local young women elected officials who will share their experiences.
Some of the topics covered:
• Why we need more young women in politics
• Crafting your message and giving your elevator speech
• Effective networking
• Campaigning and fundraising 101
• How to get involved now
You will have the opportunity to hear young women leaders, both candidates and elected officials, speak about the importance of having women in positions of political leadership.
The Young Women’s Political Leadership Program teaches participants valuable leadership skills that are transferable to future academic and professional pursuits. With the culmination of the program, you will become part of Running Start’s expansive alumni network.
Where/when/how:• The program starts at 8 am with check-in and breakfast.
• There will be various speakers and workshops throughout the day, and the program ends at 5:30 pm. Both breakfast and lunch will be provided as part of the program.

La Puente Valley Law Enforcement Exploring Academy

The Spring Law Enforcement Exploring Academy class will begin on Saturday, February 2nd.  The class is held at Bassett High School in room 313 on Saturdays from 8am to 4:30pm.  This is a 16 week course for high school students that grants high school credit. 
The class covers criminal apprehension, criminal laws, CSI, drug identification, firearms training, gang awareness, pepper spray laws, physical conditions among other things.

SENIOR BULLETIN for Monday, January28

Seniors – Important info! PLEASE READ !!
 
1. 4 year college applicants!!
You should be getting emails with really important info and requests! Please READ EVERYTHING you are sent, by email and by US mail! For instance:
EXAMPLE 1:
Be sure you have OFFICIALLY sent your test scores to the colleges, using collegeboard and/or act websites! You will NOT BE ADMITTED if you never sent your scores.
EXAMPLE 2:
Be sure you are signing up for the EPT/ELM placement test for CSU’s! If you google EPT/ELM, you will be taken to the site to sign up. You can take the test at ANY CSU, but there is no fee waiver! Please check with your counselor to see if you cleared these already with your EAP test scores from last year, or with SAT tests.
EXAMPLE 3:
Check to see if your college is requesting transcripts! You may send an OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT by filling out a form at the front desk. You may not send an official transcript if you owe any bills! Usually, only CSU’s and private colleges request transcripts before summer. Skipping any of these can result in denial of admission! THERE’S STILL A LOT TO DO!!
 
2. Financial Aid!
All college applicants – 2 year, 4 year, trade tech, art – EVERYBODY!! THIS FRIDAY, FEB. 1 is our first FAFSA ONLINE WORKSHOP IN THE “NEW” LIBRARY!! We will be assisting students periods 2 through 7. To attend, you must have a COMPLETED FAFSA WORKSHEET and/or a copy of your parents’ 2011 or 2012 taxes. EVEN BETTER: Complete the FAFSA at home at fafsa.ed.gov, and just have us check it on Friday! DON’T FORGET: there are scam sites, so only use fafsa.gov (not fafsa.com, etc!). DON’T FORGET: You MUST file a FAFSA to get state and federal $!!!!!!
 
3. SCHOLARSHIPS
It’s now the season for scholarships! Please check out the list on the back side of this bulletin, and keep it for reference. We added some new ones from last week!
DUE THIS WEEK!!!! PTA Calif. State Scholarship!
Must JOIN PTA for $5.00 with Ms. Young in Guidance! Completed applications must be given to Mrs. Hall NO LATER THAN TUES. 1/29 AT 3:00!! Letters of recommendation are required!! We have gotten this many times! TURN THE PAGE OVER AND READ THE BACK for more scholarships!!

Financial Aid and Scholarships!

FAFSA Workshops!
We will be having our first Financial Aid workshops this Friday, February 1st in the library, periods 2-7th. 
You must get teacher permission to attend.  Do not come to a workshop without your FAFSA worksheet filled out (if you lost this or didn't get one, see your counselor) , your parents' tax information (if your parents haven't filed taxes yet, you can use last year's).  Make sure you check in with your teacher first before you come to a workshop.
 
Scholarship!
Operations Safe Communities Service Award for Rowland Unified Students
$500 scholarship for students who have demonstrated academic excellence, leadership and community involvement with a focus on service to others.  To apply, you must submit a short essay of why you should be selected for this scholarship, a copy of your transcript, and a resume of your leadership experience and community involvement.  These things must be turned in tot he DATE/SARB office in the District Office by hand by 4pm on March 8th.  See you counselor for more details.

Mt SAC Summer Bridge Applications Now Available!

Mt SAC is now taking applications for their Summer Bridge program.  If you will be attending Mt SAC with the goal to transfer to a four year college/university, then you should consider applying for the Bridge Program.

The Bridge Program offers students early registration for Fall 2013 classes, a head start of up to 6 units in college credit, textbook loan program, free social events, new and lasting friendships, a sense of community that promotes a culture of success, and quick access to counselors and educational advisors.

To apply, you must fill out the Summer Bridge application and turn it in to the Mt SAC Summer Bridge office by April 19th.  Counselors have paper applications and the application is also available at www.mtsac.edu/bridge.

There are four steps to getting into the Bridge program that must be completed by April 19th:
1. Submit a Mt SAC Summer Admission Application
2. Activate your Mt SAC account
3. Submit a Summer Bridge Application
4. Take the Mt SAC Placement Tests

Form for this is in Guidance.
Current available scholarships include the following, listed by date:
Davila Scholarship for food industry workers (students or parents) – grocery/retail, NOT restaurant.  Apply at sms.scholarshipamerica.org/Davila by January 20.
Princeton Prize in Race Relations – for students helping improve race relations in high school.  www.princeton/edu/pprize. Due Jan. 31.
Christermon Scholarship for parents/grandparents working for company with liquor license – stores, restaurants etc.  christermon.com/scholarship/application. Due Feb. 1.
AXA Achievement Community Scholarship – recognizes community service. www.axa-achievement.com. Due February 1.
CA. State PTA Scholarship – you must JOIN Nogales PTA to be eligible! $5 to Ms. Young in Guidance.  Scholarship must be RECEIVED in Sacramento by Feb. 1. Apps in Guidance.
Black College Expo Scholarship – turn in at the Expo on Feb. 2 in Los Angeles.  Info at www.thecollegeexpo.org.
